After RCB again failed to win the title in Indian Premier League IPL 2023, they decided to get a new head coach for the next year’s IPL season. Andy Flower, the former Zimbabwean wicketkeeper batter will be the new head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2024.
RCB appoint Andy Flower for three years as head coach. With his appointment, Mike Hesson and Sanjay Bangar, who used to be the Director of Cricket and Batting coach respectively for RCB, will not be a part of the franchise anymore.
Why RCB is changing the coaching staff?
Royal Challengers Bangalore had a very poor season in the IPL this year. They failed to even make it to the top 4 of the points table in Indian Premier League IPL 2023. In fact, ever since that dream IPL 2016, they haven’t reached the final of the tournament in any season.
In 2017, 2018, and 2019, they didn’t even reach the playoffs. Other than the IPL 2023, they reached the playoffs in 2020, 2021, and 2022. But they failed to go one step further in those seasons.
Maybe this is the reason that RCB is looking for some fresh ideas. And Andy Flower could be the guy who can change the fate of the franchise to win their first-ever title.
RCB played three finals in IPL history
RCB has been one of the great teams in the Indian Premier League IPL history with so much fan following not just in India, but all around the world. So many great players have played for RCB like AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, M Starc, Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis, etc. But they failed to add a title to their cabinet.
Although they played three finals in IPL history. In 2009, they reach the final of the IPL but lost against Deccan Chargers.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2011 and their dream of winning the title remains. IPL 2016 was their best chance with so many players in form. But again they fell short in the close final against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Andy Flower is one of the greatest players to play the game. He has so much experience of the game while playing and has been in the coaching role for so many years. Andy Flower has won so many titles in different T20 leagues as a coach. He can give so much input to the youngsters which will help them perform. And who knows, changing management might change the fate of the franchise as well.

Multan win their first title under Flower’s leadership
In 2021, Multan Sultan won their first PSL championship during his tenure. They won their first championship after defeating Peshawar Zalmi by 47 runs in the final.
In PSL 2020, Multan also made the playoffs when Andy Flower served as their head coach.
Andy Flower’s first stint as coach in ‘The Hundred’
Flower won the title with Trent Rockets in 2022 after beating Manchester Originals in a low-scoring thriller.
Additionally, Andy Flower guided St. Lucia Kings to two CPL championships finals. He also won the Abu Dhabi T10 League.
Flower led Gulf Giants to their first title
Gulf Giants won their first-ever ILT20 title in the coaching of Gulf Giants. The Giants defeated Desert Vipers to win the inaugural season.
England’s first T20 WC came in Flower’s tenure
England cricket team won their first ever ICC T20 World Cup title in 2009 when Andy Flower was the coach. Other than the T20 WC, England has won the home and away Ashes in his tenure.
Other roles played by Andy Flower
Andy Flower, other than the head coach, becomes the batting consultant, team director, interim team director, etc for different teams. Recently, he served as a consultant for the Australian cricket team during the just-completed Ashes series.
