The IPL 2024 is just four months away and the franchises will now start looking at the auctions to build strong teams. CSK (Chennai Super Kings), one of the most successful franchises in the tournament’s history will also look to strengthen themselves for the next season. Ben Stokes, who became a part of CSK in the IPL 2023 has decided to not play in the upcoming season of the IPL. CSK will now look into the other options in the IPL 2024 auctions in place of an English all-rounder.

CSK bought Ben Stokes for a hefty amount

Chennai Super Kings (CSK), in an IPL 2023 auction has bought Ben Stokes for a whopping amount of INR 16.25 crore. He was one of the most expensive buys in the auctions. Although he only played two games in the whole tournament. He was managing his knee injury throughout those two months.

In those two games, he only scored 15 runs and bowled one over, which went for 18 runs.

Ben Stokes opted out of IPL 2024

An English all-rounder Ben Stokes has made himself unavailable for the IPL 2024. There were high chances that CSK might release him as he hasn’t played much at the expense of his contract money. Although players like Ben Stokes will find another team or CSK might buy him again at a lesser price, he himself has decided to not play the next season.

The reason for this is managing his workload. Ben Stokes has been trying to manage his workload in professional cricket over the last few years. And leaving IPL 2024 is one of the parts of this workload management.

Ben Stokes didn’t even bowl as much

Ben Stokes used to be a utility player who can contribute not just with the bat, but with the ball as well. He is a very handy bowler and can pick wickets if needed. But to manage his workload, he has decided to not bowl. You can see that Ben Stokes hasn’t bowled much as he used to do in the past.

Ben Stokes to undergo knee surgery

Ben Stokes will have left knee surgery as he has been struggling with this in the last 18 months or so. He has postponed the surgery due to the ICC World Cup 2023.

The all-rounder had come out of his ODI retirement to play in the marquee tournament. It was the captain Jos Buttler and the England team’s management who persuaded Stokes to play in the tournament. although his team’s campaign wasn’t up to the mark as the WC 2019 champions only managed to win 3 games. They finished at No. 7 in the points table.

When will he come back to play?

Ben Stokes is eyeing a comeback in the 5-match test series against India after his knee surgery. As a captain of a test team, the series against India will be one of the important assignments. England will play a five-match test series in India, starting on January 25 in Hyderabad.

He will not play in the IPL 2024 and will look to play the all-important ICC World T20 in the West Indies and the US.

Ben Stokes in the IPL:-

In the Indian Premier League IPL, Ben Stokes made his debut in 2017. Since then, he only played 45 games and scored 935 runs with an average of 24.61 and a strike rate of almost 134. He has scored 2 fifties and 2 hundreds in that period with the highest score of 107 not out.

With the ball, he has taken 28 wickets with an average of 35.43 and a strike rate of 24.61. His economy is 8.64 with the best figures of 3 for 15.

His numbers are ordinary in the IPL. The numbers didn’t reflect what kind of a player he is. Also, in the last few years, Ben Stokes hasn’t played much in the IPL. He has only played 20 games in the last 4 seasons since 2019 (missed IPL 2022).

Stokes struggling with mental health in the last few years

Not only injuries, Ben Stokes has been managing his mental health issues in the last few years. Along with workload management, management mental health was also one of the reasons to retire from one of the formats in July 2022. Playing all three formats takes a lot of toll on you nowadays.

What next for Chennai Super Kings?

Chennai Super Kings will now look at the other all-rounders’ options in the IPL 2024 auction. A player who can contribute in both aspects is what CSK will need in the next season. CSK always looks for all-round options as they have been doing over the years.

The franchise will also look for batsmen who can bat in the middle order after Ambati Rayudu’s retirement. Let’s see for whom they will go for in the auction.
