Daniel Vettori to become the new head coach of SRH after another horrible season

Sunrisers Hyderabad has appointed Daniel Vettori as the new head coach for the IPL 2024. The former New Zealand all-rounder will replace Brian Lara; who failed to make a mark as coach in his first season of Indian Premier League IPL 2023 with the franchise. Ever since Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) won the title in 2016 under the coaching of Tom Moody, they are changing the head coach for the fourth time.

Why SRH is changing the head coach?

SRH, after their title-winning season in 2016 has failed to win another title in IPL history. Although they came closer when they reach the final in 2018. But CSK beat them to win their 3rd title.

Since 2018, they reach the playoffs only two times (in 2019 and 2020). Their performance over the last 3 years is even worst. In the last three seasons (2021-23), they finished last in the points table.

What are the problems for SRH?

Big guns not firing

One of the main reasons for SRH is their big guns not firing. They let go Rashid Khan from the franchise. And their other big players haven’t performed as per the expectations. This year as well (2023), they had some of the big names like Aiden Markram, Harry Brook, G Philips, etc. But all have not lived up to the team’s expectations. Their bowling attack also looks toothless with no such wicket-takers in the team. Only H Klaasen does well consistently this year.

Differences between Warner and the SRH franchise during IPL 2021

If you remember properly, the Sunrisers Hyderabad started crumbling when there was some difference between the former SRH captain David Warner and the franchise. They were not on the same page. ‘

We also saw Warner being dropped from the playing XI. And eventually, they released him from the squad as well. Since that time, nothing is going well for SRH.

Too much changing in the coaching staff

Sunrisers Hyderabad hasn’t given a longer run to any new head coach to settle into the team’s dynamics. Tom Moody was the coach for SRH from 2013 to 2019. After that, Trevor Bayliss becomes the head coach for 2 years (2020-21).

SRH brings back Tom Moody again for one year (in 2022). But SRH finished last in the points table that year.

Brian Lara failed to make a mark in his first year

In 2023, SRH made Brian Lara the new head coach. But the performance of the team hasn’t changed. They again finished last in the points table with only 4 wins in 14 games.

Brian Lara after the IPL 2023

Brian Lara, the former SRH’s head coach expresses his unhappiness after his exclusion from the role. Lara also talked about the struggles with traveling during his first year – IPL 2023 with SRH as a coach.

“First of all, it’s my first year. Not getting to grips with the emotions of going through an IPL season. Especially when we were back to traveling to different venues and finding out different surfaces. Our last year was based on 3-4 venues, so there is a huge difference in that.” Brian Lara explained

Daniel Vettori – The New Head Coach of SRH

Now, Sunrisers Hyderabad has decided to appoint Daniel Vettori as the new head coach of the franchise. The New Zealander has been in a coaching role with different teams for a few years now.

Even he used to be the head coach of RCB from 2014 to 2019. RCB played the final in 2016 in his tenure.

Daniel Vettori as Head Coach in CPL

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise Barbados Royals names Daniel Vettori as their head coach in August 2021. Nevertheless, his team struggled and finished bottom in the standings with just three victories in ten games.

Other roles played by Daniel Vettori

In July 2019, Daniel Vettori also takes on the role of spin bowling coach for the Bangladesh Cricket Team.

During the inaugural season of the cricket competition known as the Euro T20 Slam, Vettori was chosen as the Dublin Chiefs’ head coach. However, the competition was canceled later.

He is currently the Australian Cricket Team’s assistant coach and spin bowling coach. His position will probably be kept up till the ICC World Cup 2023, which begins on October 5 in India.

Will Daniel Vettori be able to do anything different?

As we saw, Vettori hasn’t had so much success as a coach in his short after-playing career. But his so much years of experience will help the team to guide us to a new height. He has played so much cricket all around the world.

Also, he was associated with RCB before. So he knows how the IPL team works and knows the dynamics of the league.

Conclusion

So this is the new development from the SRH camp. SRH has to give Daniel Vettori some time before settling and not judging him on the basis of just one year. Just like they did with others.

The decision on other staff like the bowling coach, assistant coach, fielding coach, etc will be taken later.
