ICC confirmed the change in venue for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024
The ICC has confirmed that the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup will now happen in UAE. It was on the line as there was political unrest in Bangladesh. The ICC has first given the hosting rights of the tournament to Bangladesh and unveiled the schedule in May 2024.
Things were not looking good in Bangladesh when the protest happened and it affected the country’s affairs for a while. Due to this, the ICC has to move the tournament out of Bangladesh. The tournament will now be played in UAE across two venues; Dubai and Sharjah – from 3 to 20 October. Bangladesh will continue to hold the hosting rights of the tournament.
BCB tried to ensure the tournament would held in Bangladesh T20 World Cup 2024
The BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) made every effort to ensure that the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 would happen in Bangladesh. When the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) secretary Jay Shah ruled out the possibility of India hosting the T20 WC in place of Bangladesh, the ICC was exploring other venues for the tournament. At that time, the ICC was about to make a decision on new venues for the tournament and was set to announce it on August 15.
But, the BCB official asked for a few more days before ICC took a call on this matter. The BCB was confident that they will come up with a solution that would meet the ICC’s terms. Unfortunately, on Tuesday (August 20), the ICC officially confirmed UAE as the new venue for the Women’s T20 WC 2024.
The ICC’s CEO sympathises with Bangladesh’s effort, looking forward to holding an ICC event in Bangladesh in the future
The ICC’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Geoff Allardice has appreciated Bangladesh’s effort to explore all the avenues. He sympathizes with BCB for not holding the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in Bangladesh. Geoff is also looking forward to taking the ICC events to Bangladesh soon.
“It is a shame not to be hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh as we know the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have staged a memorable event,” ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said in a statement.
“I would like to thank the team at the BCB for exploring all avenues to try and enable the event to be hosted in Bangladesh, but travel advisories from the governments of a number of the participating teams meant that wasn’t feasible. However, they will retain hosting rights. We look forward to taking an ICC global event to Bangladesh in the near future.” – He added.
Geoff thanked the Emirates Board for stepping in on behalf of Bangladesh
Geoff Allardice also thanked the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) for stepping in to host the tournament on behalf of Bangladesh. He also appreciates Sri Lanka (SL) and Zimbabwe (ZIM) for their offers to host the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 and looking forward to hosting the ICC tournaments in both countries.
“I’d also like to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for stepping in to host on behalf of the BCB and Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their generous offers of support, and we look forward to seeing ICC global events in both of those countries in 2026.” – Allardice concluded.
Why UAE has been chosen as the new venue for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024?
The cricket in UAE has been growing rapidly in the last decade or so. We have seen so many big tournaments like the IPL (Indian Premier League), T20 World Cup, T10 League, and many other franchise cricket tournaments happening in UAE because of their good infrastructure and facilities.
Their world-class facilities and well-equipped infrastructure are the main reasons the ICC moved the tournament to the UAE. Also, the ICC is looking for a venue that matches the time zone of Bangladesh and good weather conditions. UAE has also ticked that box and will host the tournament in October.
Conclusion
So this is the latest development regarding a change in the venue of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. It will hamper Bangladesh cricket for a while and their reputation will also be affected. But this is how it is. Let’s see how things panned out in Bangladesh.
