Bangladesh cricket team is yet to win an ICC T20 World Cup title. Although they have done well in the bilateral series in T20Is, their performance in the T20 WCs hasn’t been up to the mark. In 2007, they only managed to reach Super 8, where they lost all three games.
They got out of the tournament in 2009 without even winning a single game in the Group stage. The same thing happened in 2010 and 2012 as well. In 2014, when Bangladesh hosted the tournament, they lost all 4 games in Super 10.
After doing well in the first round, the Bangladesh cricket team lost all 4 games in the Group stage in 2016 as well. In 2021, they lost all 5 games in Group stage. And in the last edition in 2022, they managed to win 2 games out of 5. Those two wins came against the Netherlands and Zimbabwe.
Although Bangladesh has competed well against big teams in bilateral series, they didn’t replicate those performances in the T20 WCs.
Why Bangladesh cricket team hasn’t done well in the T20 World Cups?
One of the main reasons is not adapting the format. T20 cricket nowadays is played with a lot of freedom and intent. And Bangladesh doesn’t have those players who can play with a lot of intent. Their batters do play fast and with a decent strike rate, but other teams are far ahead as compared to Bangladesh. Other teams have those big hitters who can hit the ball long. Also, nowadays, teams don’t look to go deep and the batters started playing shots from the word go.
Another reason is Bangladesh doesn’t play on good batting wickets. In today’s time, pitches are being made for batting where a batter can hit through the line. Once in a while the surfaces are conducive for the bowlers (either for the spinners or the pacers). Bangladesh mostly played on those pitches at home, which are slowish and sluggish. Their bowlers bowled well on those surfaces (especially the spinners) and that’s where Bangladesh won most of the games in bilateral series. But that didn’t help them when the conditions were alien to them. They need bowlers who know how to bowl on good batting decks.
How far will Team Bangladesh advance in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024?
We have seen Bangladesh cricket doing well recently. They won an ODI series against Sri Lanka recently and lost a close-fought T20I series against the same opponent. They will give them a world of confidence.
Bangladesh will also tour the US for a three-match T20I series. The three T20Is will happen on May 21, 23 and 25. Prairie View Cricket Complex, Houston will host all three games in the series. The tour will help the Bangladesh cricket team to acclimatize to the conditions before the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. It will be the first-ever T20I series between the two teams.

Bangladesh is placed in Group D along with Sri Lanka, South Africa, Netherlands, and Nepal. They will play their first game on June 08 against Sri Lanka in Dallas.
After that, they will face a tough opponent in South Africa on June 10 in New York. Their last two group stage game will be against Netherlands and Nepal at St Vincent.
