IPL Teams With The Most IPL Finals In History

The 17^th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) is on the verge of completion. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has already qualified for their 4^th IPL final and they will now wait for the 2^nd team, who will compete with them in the final. In those 16 years, ever since the IPL started in 2008, we have seen so many teams reaching the finals and winning the tournament as well. Today, we will talk about the IPL teams with the most IPL finals in history. 

IPL teams with the most IPL finals in the history

(1) Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

By far one of the most successful IPL teams in the history of the tournament. CSK has reached the IPL finals 10 times in these 17 editions. They reached their first IPL final in the inaugural season but lost the game against Rajasthan Royals (RR). After that, they won their first IPL title in 2010. CSK are also a champion of the IPL 2023. They have won a total of 5 IPL trophies (in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023), all under the leadership of MS Dhoni.

This year, they were knocked out of the tournament after losing a league-stage match against RCB.

(2) Mumbai Indians (MI)

MI has reached 6 IPL finals and won 5 out of them. They reached their first IPL final in 2010 in the captaincy of Sachin Tendulkar. But they lost that final game against MS Dhoni’s CSK.

After that, they won 5 IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. All those trophies came in the captaincy of Rohit Sharma.

(3) Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

KKR has just reached in their 4^th IPL finals this year, by beating SRH in the first Qualifier. They won two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014, under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir. KKR also reached the final of IPL 2021 but lost that game against CSK.

Now, Gautam Gambhir would want to win an IPL trophy with KKR again. This time, not as a player but as a mentor.

(4) Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)

RCB is the 4^th most successful IPL team who reached the IPL finals 3 times in the tournament’s history. But unfortunately, they didn’t get over the line on all three occasions.

They reached the IPL finals for the first time in 2009 but lost a game against Deccan Chargers. Then, again they reached the IPL finals in 2011 and 2016 but lost both games against CSK and SRH respectively.

(5) Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)

SRH has played 2 IPL finals till now in the history. They first reached the final in 2016 and went on to win the title as well in David Warner’s captaincy.

Then, in 2018, SRH again reached the finals in the captaincy of Kane Williamson. But they couldn’t cross the line and lost to CSK in the final.

Now, again they have a chance to reach the final and win a trophy. SRH lost the first Qualifier against KKR. But they will get another chance to reach the final in the 2^nd Qualifier. 

(6) Rajasthan Royals (RR)

RR won the first-ever IPL title in 2008, by beating CSK in the final. Shane Warne becomes the first captain to win an IPL trophy. They again played an IPL finals in 2022 but lost to a newly formed Gujarat Titans (GT) in the final that year.

RR also has an opportunity this year to become the 2^nd finalist if they win an Eliminator against RCB and 2^nd Qualifier against SRH. They will look to win their 2^nd IPL title as well.

(7) Gujarat Titans (GT)

GT came into existence in 2022. They went on to win the title in their first year as well. They win the IPL 2022 by beating RR in the final. Then, again they played the final in IPL 2023 but lost a last-ball thriller against CSK. Ravindra Jadeja becomes the hero for CSK in 2023. GT has played both the IPL finals under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya.

(8) Deccan Chargers (DC)

Deccan Chargers was a team that existed till IPL 2011. It was also a Hyderabad-based franchise but owned by a different media company called Deccan Chronicle.

DC has only played one IPL final in 2009 and won the title in that season as well. In 2012, another Hyderabad-based IPL franchise, SRH came into existence.

(9) Punjab Kings (PBKS)

PBKS, previously known as Kings XI Punjab hasn’t tasted much success in the tournament’s history. They only managed to reach one final in 2014 and lost that game against KKR.

(10) Rising Pune Super Giants (RPGS)

When RR and CSK were banned for two years, two other teams, Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Super Giants came into existence in 2016-17. In 2017, RPGS reached the final under the leadership of Steve Smith but lost that game to MI.

(11) Delhi Capitals (DC)

Delhi is another team that reached the IPL finals in 2020, in the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer. But MI was too good in the final for DC. Shreyas Iyer will have a chance to go one step further in IPL 2024, with KKR reaching the final in his captaincy.
