Bangladesh has the hosting rights of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 right now
The ICC has approved the hosting rights to BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. They have also unveiled the schedule of the tournament in May 2024. But, as we all know, there is political unrest going on in Bangladesh which is affecting the country in many ways. It might also affect Bangladesh’s ability to host the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.
Will India host the T20 WC in place of Bangladesh ?
Earlier, there were some reports which suggested that the ICC is looking for an alternate venue for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 because of the political unrest in Bangladesh. India, Sri Lanka, and UAE (United Arab Emirates) were reportedly the alternate venues for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. But, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) secretary, Jay Shah ruled out the possibility of India hosting the T20 WC.
ICC considering UAE as a potential venue for the T20 WC
According to a report by Cricbuzz, the ICC is looking for other options for hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. UAE might be the front-runner as of now in ICC’s consideration.
On the other hand, the BCB is asking for some more time to defend the hosting of the tournament. They are confident that they will sort it out and come up with a plan that will meet the ICC’s requirement to host the tournament.
Decision on August 20 in ICC meeting
Earlier, the ICC was about to take a call on Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 venue on August 15. But, the BCB asked for a few days more before taking a call. Now the ICC will decide on August 20 in the meeting. “A BCB official said on Thursday that it has requested the ICC for five more days before making a call. If the ICC grants the extra time, then it would have to decide on August 20, the day of the
board meeting. It is understood that the ICC was originally expected to take the call on the Women’s World Cup by August 15.” – said the report.
T20 WC venue is not on the main agenda in the ICC meeting
The report also stated that the finalizing of the terms of reference for an investigation into the delivery of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, which the USA and West Indies co-hosted from June 1–29, is reportedly on the agenda for the ICC meeting on August 20. But, with the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 not too far away, the ICC will not overlook that matter.
The international governing body of cricket, consisting of Roger Twose, Lawson Naidoo, and Imran Khwaja, constituted a panel to provide a report on this issue during the ICC Annual Conference in Colombo last month.
“The meeting has been mainly called to address this issue but a decision on the Women’s World Cup cannot be ruled out.” – quoted from the report.
ECB is keen to host the tournament as well
While the ICC is looking to host the Women’s T20 WC 2024, the ECB (England Cricket Board) has also shown keen interest in hosting the tournament. Not just the ECB, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe are also keen to host the tournament in their country.
The ICC will look to host the tournament in a country after considering the logistics, a similar time zone to Bangladesh, clear weather conditions, and an infracture. Right now, UAE is best in this category for ICC.
“The ICC is seeking a host country with a time zone similar to that of Bangladesh and clear weather conditions, and UAE fits that criteria well. Besides, the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) boasts world-class infrastructure. And more importantly, the ECB is believed to be keen on hosting the event. It is understood that Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka are also interested. With just about 50 days remaining for the start of the tournament, time is running out.” – added the report.
Conclusion
So this is the latest development on Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 hosting. Bangladesh is in bad shape right now and might lose the hosting rights of the tournament as well. It will also affect Bangladesh’s reputation as a country.
Let’s see how things panned out. What do you think? Will Bangladesh be able to host the tournament in their own country? Or the ICC have to go for an alternative option?
