Shreyas Iyer To Captain KKR in IPL 2024

India’s middle-order batter and KKR’s regular captain, Shreyas Iyer is back for the IPL 2024. He missed the IPL 2023 and a World Test Championship 2023 final due to a back injury. Nitish Rana becomes the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the absence of Shreyas Iyer. Under Rana’s captaincy, KKR finished at No. 7 in the points table. They managed to win 6 games out of 14 in IPL 2023.

But now, KKR’s CEO, Venky Mysore confirmed the comeback news of Shreyas Iyer. It will be a huge boost for the franchise as the regular captain is back in the team. Iyer was KKR’s captain in IPL 2022 as well. Not just captaincy, he also brings his experience in batting for the team as well.

What does Venky Mysore say about Iyer’s comeback?

Venky Mysore, on Twitter, has said it was unfortunate that Iyer missed the last season. But now they are delighted to have him back as a player and as captain. Adding to that, he said Shreyas has worked hard to recover from this injury and showed great character. Venky also praised Iyer’s recent form.

Nitish Rana will be Iyer’s deputy

KKR’s captain in IPL 2023, Nitish Rana will be Shreyas’s deputy in the IPL 2024. The news has been given in the same post by KKR via Twitter. Venky Mysore said the franchise is grateful that Nitish agreed to step in Iyer’s shoes in the last season and did a great job. He also said Nitish will support Shreyas Iyer in every possible way for the benefit of the team.

Shreyas Iyer has his say on this

On this, Shreyas Iyer talks about the challenges the team faced last season, including his absence due to injury. While praising his deputy, he said Nitish Rana has done a commendable job in his absence. Iyer is delighted to see Rana as a vice-captain and said it will strengthen the leadership group.

Good for KKR?

Shreyas Iyer coming back as captain is very good news for Kolkata Knight Riders. Since Gautam Gambhir, the franchise has been looking for a long-term captain. Gautam Gambhir captained KKR for 7 years (from 2011 to 2017) and has done well. Gambhir has won two titles as KKR’s captain in 2012 and 2014. KKR hasn’t won any title after that.

In 2017, they released Gautam Gambhir and since then, they have tried 4 different captains till now. In 2018-19, Dinesh Karthik captained the side before Eoin Morgan took the reins in 2020-21. The franchise has decided to have Shreyas Iyer as their captain in 2022.

Unfortunately, Iyer missed the IPL 2023 due to a back injury and Nitish Rana was given the responsibility of leading the team.

Now, it’s good that their regular captain Shreyas Iyer is back for the IPL 2024. He will bring his experience to the team as well. Iyer was also the vice-captain of Team India in the last two T20Is against Australia recently. Let’s see how he does as captain this year.

Gautam Gambhir also back in KKR

Earlier, KKR also announced the return of Gautam Gambhir in KKR as a mentor. The former Indian cricketer has played the same role for the newly formed franchise Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2022-23. In both seasons, LSG has managed to reach the playoffs. Let’s see what Gambhir brings to the table for KKR in IPL 2024.

Other support staff of KKR in IPL 2024

Other than Gautam Gambhir, Chandrakant Pandit will be the head coach while Abhishek Nayar will be the assistant coach. Bharat Arun will be the bowling coach with AR Srikkanth in a talent scouting and player acquisition role. There are a few other members in the support staff like Chris Donaldson (strength and conditioning coach), Omkar Salvi (assistant bowling coach), Ryan Ten Doeschate (fielding coach), Wayne Bentley (team manager), Abhishek Sawant (assistant physio), Dr. Srikanth Narayanaswamy (team doctor), Nathan Leamon (team analyst), Prasanth Panchada (head physiotherapist), and Sagar V (assistant strength and conditioning coach).
