The IPL 2024 auction has been concluded with some record-breaking buys by the franchises. We have seen the crossing of a 20 crore INR benchmark for the first time in the tournament’s history. Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc went for a whopping INR 20.50 crore and 24.75 crore respectively in the IPL auction. As far as the Bangladeshi players, Mustafizur Rahman is the only player bought by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise in the IPL 2024 auction. We will talk about it more in detail. So don’t go anywhere.
CSK Bought Mustafizur Rahman in the IPL 2024 auction
CSK has gone for a Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman in the IPL 2024 auction. They bought the left-arm pacer at his base price of INR 2 crore. Looking at the skillset of Mustafizur Rahman, the decision is looking worthy. As of now, the IPL 2024 is going to be held in India. CSK will play half of their league games in Chennai (home games). And the pitch suits the skill set of the left-arm pacer as he has very good cutters and slower balls as variations. The Chennai wicket is helpful for these kinds of bowlers as the nature of the wicket is generally slowish, where the ball doesn’t come to the bat easily.
Not just the slowers and cutters, he has a very good Yorker in his armory. He has proved his worth as a death bowler over the years for Bangladesh and in franchise cricket.
Mustafizur Rahman – Only Bangladeshi player in the IPL 2024
Mustafizur Rahman will be the only player in the IPL 2024. Players like Shakib al Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, and Shoriful Islam pulled out of the IPL 2024 due to their respective reasons. And the franchises haven’t shown interest in Litton Das, who played for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2023. Litton Das was released by the KKR franchise before the IPL 2024 auction.
Last season (IPL 2023), a total of three Bangladeshi players have played in the tournament. Those three are Litton Das (for KKR), Shakib al Hasan (for KKR), and Mustafizur Rahman (for DC).
Mustafizur Rahman’s IPL career breakout
Mustafizur Rahman started his IPL career in 2016 for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). He also became the Emerging Player of the Year in that season. SRH also won the trophy in 2016 and the pacer played a huge role in the team’s success.
Mustafizur Rahman is the only overseas player to win an Emerging Player of the Year award in IPL history till now.
In the IPL 2016, the pacer took 17 wickets in 16 games with an average of 24.76 and a strike rate of 21.52. He was quite economical as well with an economy rate of 6.90 and his best bowling figures in IPL 2016 was 3 for 16.
The star pacer played for SRH in 2017 as well before he went to Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2018. He didn’t feature in the IPL 2019-2020.
In IPL 2021, Rajasthan Royals (RR) bought him for INR 1 crore. He played 14 games in that season and took 14 wickets.
His last IPL franchise before this auction was Delhi Capitals (DC). DC bought him in the IPL auction 2022 for INR 2 crore. He played for DC for two years (2022-23).
Last season, he only played two games, and then DC released him before the IPL 2024 auction. Now, Mustafizur Rahman is set to play for CSK in the upcoming season.
Is it a good move by CSK?
CSK has to believe that it’s a good bet. Mustafizur Rahman will play a big role in the death overs for CSK. He is a genuine wicket-taker and can restrict runs at the back end of the inning. Other than Mustafizur Rahman, they have Matheesha Pathirana, who can play that role as well. The team has to decide whether to play either one of them or both.
Conclusion
So this is it for today. We will only see one Bangladeshi cricketer in Mustafizur Rahman in the IPL 2024. The pacer is currently playing a 3-match ODI series against New Zealand in New Zealand.
