The 13th edition of the ICC ODI World Cup is set to commence from October 05, 2023, with the finalists of the last edition, England and New Zealand will kick start the tournament. In the previous 12 editions, we have seen 6 different teams emerge as a winner. The tournament has a long history and today, we will see all the ODI World Cup winners list in this article.
The ODI World Cup started in 1975 for the first time with 8 teams participating in the tournament. Two groups were made for those 8 teams. As time passes, the tournament saw more teams participating in the tournament. In those 12 editions, we have seen the tournament played in different formats. Now, let’s see the ODI World Cup winners list of the previous editions.
List of the ICC ODI World Cup Winners (Past 12 Editions):-
(1) ICC World Cup 1975 (West Indies)
England hosted that tournament and the team made with the different parts of the Caribbean won the first-ever edition of the ICC ODI World Cup. West Indies won their all three games in the Group Stages against Australia, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
They made 291 in the first inning and bowled Australia out for 274 in the final. West Indies becomes the first ODI World Cup winners in 1975. They have an intimidating pace attack, well complimented by their batting. And how can we forget that aura of Sir Viv Richards? Those were the days when the opposition teams fear to play against West Indies (WI).
(2) ICC World Cup 1979 (West Indies)
West Indies shows the world why they are the champions. They defended their title and emerged as the ICC ODI World Cup winners for the 2nd time.
By winning two games in the group stage against New Zealand and India, they advanced to the knockouts. One game against Sri Lanka ended with no result without a ball being bowled.
In the knockouts, they won the semifinal against Pakistan by 43 runs. And then went on to win the final against England by 92 runs at Lord’s.
Gordon Greenidge (WI) scored the most runs (253) in the tournament. Mike Hendrick (ENG) also becomes the leading wicket-taker with 10 wickets in the tournament.
(3) ICC World Cup 1983 (India)
It was the biggest moment in Indian cricket history at that point of time. No one gave a sniff to Team India before starting the tournament. But they proved everyone wrong and becomes the ICC ODI World Cup winners for the first time. They also stopped West Indies to win the ODI WC for the 3rd consecutive time.
Team India started their WC campaign by winning against the Giant West Indies by 34 runs in Manchester. They won 4 games in group stages and then won the semifinal against England by 6 wickets while chasing 214.
In the final, WI opted to bowl after winning the toss on a greenish surface. India bundled out for just 183. But the bowlers did the job for the team and shows the world that the first win against WI was not a fluke.
Roger Binny, with 18 wickets becomes the highest wicket-taker of the tournament. And how can we forget that inning of 175 not out from the Indian captain Kapil Dev against Zimbabwe? India were in all sorts of trouble with 17 for 5.
(4) ICC World Cup 1987 (Australia)
Australia started their habit of winning ICC ODI WC trophies in 1987 when they becomes the ODI World Cup winners for the first time. They beat England in the final by 7 runs.
(5) ICC World Cup 1992 (Pakistan)
In the leadership of Imran Khan, Pakistan becomes the ODI World Cup winners for the first time in Australia.
(6) ICC World Cup 1996 (Sri Lanka)
SL won the final against AUS by 7 wickets and becomes the WC champions for the first time.
(7) ICC World Cup 1999 (Australia)
Australia becomes the WC champions for 2nd time in 1999. G Allott and Shane Warne took 20 wickets each in the tournament.
(8) ICC World Cup 2003 (Australia)
Australia again won the title in 2003 by beating India in the final. It was their 3rd WC title.
(9) ICC World Cup 2007 (Australia)
Australia becomes the first team to win 3 consecutive ODI WCs when they won in 2007.
(10) ICC World Cup 2011 (India)
After a long wait of 28 years, India becomes the ODI World Cup winners for the 2nd time under the leadership of MS Dhoni.
(11) ICC World Cup 2015 (Australia)
M Clarke led the team to their 5th ICC ODI WC title. They beat NZ in the final by 7 wickets.
(12) ICC World Cup 2019 (England)
England won the ODI WC for the first time by the barest of margin. The game was tied and the match went on to the super over.
After NZ managed to tie the super-over as well, England becomes the champions with the boundary count rule.
