Bangladesh Cricket Team Squad Analysis For The ICC T20 World Cup 2024
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced their squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, starting from June 01. They submitted a team before to the ICC on April 30 and made just one change in the team. Najmul Hossain Shanto will lead the side, with Taskin Ahmed as his deputy. Today, we will do a SWOT of the Bangladesh Cricket Team’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad.
BCB waited till the Zimbabwe series to make a call on Saifuddin
BCB’s chairmen of the National Selection Panel, Gazi Ashraf Hossain said the team waited till the completion of the Zimbabwe series to make a call on Saifuddin. They added Saifuddin to the team which was given to the ICC on April 30. But eventually, Tanzim Hasan Sakib made it into the Bangladesh cricket team’ squad ahead of him.
Najmul Hossain Shanto will lead the team in the marquee tournament. Taskin Ahmed, despite picking up an injury during the Zimbabwe series, has been given the role of vice-captain. According to the medical team, Taskin will be fit at some point during the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Now let’s start with the strengths of the team in SWOT analysis.
Strengths
(1) A good overall bowling unit
Bangladesh has a very potent bowling unit, whether it is fast bowlers or spinners. They always rely on their spinners to do the job in the middle overs. An experienced Shakib al Hasan is an out-n-out wicket-taker. Mahedi and Rishad also had a decent outing in the Zimbabwe series.
As far as fast bowling is concerned, they have an experienced duo of Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed in the team. Both have been bowling well off-late and their experience will be vital for the team. On the other hand, Shoriful Islam is in red-hot form right now, and youngster Tanzim Hasan has also impressed in the recently concluded series. So Bangladesh’s fast bowling is looking in good shape right now.
(2) Pitches in the T20 WC might suit Bangladesh
One of the other strengths of Bangladesh is doing well on slow and sluggish pitches. The pitches in the Caribbean are generally on the slower side. And the expectations are that the drop-in pitches in the US will be on a slower side as well. Those kinds of pitches suit the Bangladesh Cricket Team as they play on such pitches at home.
As you can see, this strength is interconnected to the strength we have discussed first. They are not the team who won games in high-scoring venues. Their batters give them a 160-180 kind of target before their bowlers exploit these kinds of conditions to win games. So this might be a very big strength of Bangladesh going into the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Weaknesses
Their batting has been a concern recently. Bangladesh’s batters are not in good touch, and Gazi Ashraf Hossain also raised that point.
Also, they don’t have hard hitters as such in the team, who can finish games for them lower down the order. Mahmudullah is an experienced batter in the lower middle order, but he hasn’t been scoring runs lately. And they need a few more batters to assist him in those crucial situations. They need to figure this out before it is too late.
Also, they are not playing the brand of T20 cricket that the other teams are playing. It’s one of the weaknesses that they need to look at.
Opportunity
Bangladesh has the opportunity to make this event a memorable one for the country. They haven’t won any ICC trophy yet. And as we discussed earlier, it might be their chance to make this opportunity count as those pitches might suit them. The opportunity to show the world what they are made of.
Threats
One of the major threats for the Bangladesh cricket team is they are placed in Group D, along with South Africa, Sri Lanka, Netherlands, and Nepal. They have to one at least 2-3 games to be able to go into the next round.
It will be a big challenge for them to beat a few big teams like South Africa and Sri Lanka. And you cannot discount a team like the Netherlands, who has surprised us in the last two World Cups (T20 and ODI). They also have a newly formed rivalry against Sri Lanka. So it will be a big threat to their WC campaign.
Another threat for them is the excess baggage of winning the tournament as they never won it. Bangladesh has to make sure they won’t go with the baggage of the tournament’s history and try to take it game by game.
