Tamim Iqbal to take the commentary role on the Bangladesh tour of India
The left-handed opener is out of cricketing action for almost a year. He played his last international game (ODI) against New Zealand (NZ) at Shere Bangla National Stadium on September 23, 2023.
Amid much conjecture on Tamim Iqbal future—a board director or a comeback to cricket—the former captain of Bangladesh is now adding his voice to the India-Bangladesh commentary box. Tamim Iqbal will join a star-studded commentary panel for the India vs Bangladesh 2024 series.
Iqbal has done a commentary stint before as well
It will not be the first time that Tamim Iqbal will lend his voice as a cricket commentator. He made his commentary debut as a special guest during the BPL (Bangladesh Premier League) 2022 game between Chattogram Challengers and Khulna Tigers.
As far as commentating in an international match, he lent his voice during Bangladesh’s home series against New Zealand last year, in a 2nd test match at Mirpur. He has done the commentary in patches but is now set to take the role for a full tour.
This upcoming commentary stint will be Tamim’s first assignment as a commentator ‘overseas’.
Other notable commentators in the India-Bangladesh series
The Bangladesh cricket team will play two Test matches and three T20Is in India. Tamim will join the commentary panel in all five games. Athar Ali Khan will be another Bangladeshi to join the commentary panel.
India’s panel features Harsha Bhogle, Murali Kartik, and Deep Dasgupta.
Will Tamim Iqbal come back to international cricket?
There is no certainty about Iqbal’s international future as a player. Tamim unexpectedly announced his retirement in July of last year, but shortly before the ODI World Cup in October, he had second thoughts at the former Prime Minister’s request. But after being turned down to play in every match, he decided to withdraw from the competition and take a break.
Recently, it was revealed that Faruque Ahmed, the recently elected president of the BCB, was interested in getting Tamim back on the team or on the board. Let’s see how things panned out. Tamim’s only focus currently would be the commentary stint in those 5 matches on the Bangladesh tour of India.
Tamim’s numbers in international cricket
Tamim is by far the best opener in the Bangladesh cricket team’s history. Whether it is a T20I, ODI, or Test Cricket, he has done well for the team and won so many games. His ability to pace the inning and game sense makes him a valuable player in any team.
In T20Is, he has played 78 games and scored 1758 runs with an average of 24.08 and a strike rate of 117.2. He has 8357 runs in ODIs and 5134 runs in Tests.
Tamim is the 2nd highest run scorer in tests, the highest run-scorer in ODIs, and 4th highest run-scorer in T20Is for Bangladesh. Now, we will see him lending his voice in the upcoming series.
His ability to narrate the game with clarity, insight, and excitement can elevate the viewing experience. A skilled commentator combines a deep understanding of cricket’s technical aspects with the ability to convey these in a way that both seasoned fans and casual viewers can appreciate. Tamim has all the qualities with lots of on-field cricket experience, which he can share with the viewers.
